Good Morning Grade Eight!

This week is shortened due to the Holidays.

Monday December 17th, 2012.
We start off our week completing assignments that are outstanding. We will have two work periods to complete unfinished work before the holidays.
Students who are a part of GLEE will partake in a SING OUT in the afternoon at 1:15pm.


Tuesday December 18th, 2012.

  We will be in the library working on holiday cards for our peers. It is a fun period to create and design holiday cards for your friends.
Swimming is a FREE SWIM. You are encouraged to bring pool toys to play with. Parents are more than welcome to join!

Students involved in GLEE will be part of a Sing Out in the afternoon starting at 1:15pm.


Wednesday December 19th, 2012. 

 In the morning, the grade eights will be exchanging their Secret Santa gifts and watching a holiday movie in hte afternoon. Students are more than welcome to bring peanut-free snacks on this day.

 Any students involved in the Sing Outs with Ms Mc Nabb will be leaving at 1pm for the afternoon.


Thursday December 20th, 2012  is your last day of school before the Holidays. 

The grade seven and eight classes will be heading to Scarborough Town Centre for the day to shop, have lunch, and watch a movie together.

Today is Monday December 10, 2012.

Today's topic is about your last day before the holidays. We will be heading to the Scarborough Town Centre for a day of shopping and movie watching. Therefore, today's topic is:
"When we go on our trip on the 20th, what are you most looking forward to? What will you be purchasing?"

Library 8P : 

Today's library period will be devoted to creating fun holiday cards for your peers. Ms. Purvis and I will talk about some fun sites that allow you to create and design (and send) holiday cards to your friends.

Creative Writing:


Today's topic is a fun writing topic. Pretending you are a young child, write a letter to Santa stating what you would like for Christmas and any other requests you may have.
I hope Santa answers your letter!

**Keep in mind that today is devoted to concert rehearsals; therefore, your schedule will probably be changed to accommodate the concert.


Grammar:

We start off our day with a new Grammar unit on Interjections. It is a short unit that we may be able to complete before the holidays. Don't forget to bring your book to class!

Today is Thursday December 13th.

Today is a big day for students: Its our Holiday Concert and a Pizza Dinner.

Novel Study

Today we will present the Chapter 3 and 4 summaries we worked on last week with Ms. Purvis. Students have been navigating through CREAZA and have read up to Chapter 4. Students can create a comic strip using paper and colouring pencils if they wish.

Spelling


Last week we had a PA Day, so this week we will pick up where we left off 2 weeks ago. Test: Unit 13, Lessons Unit 14. Good luck on your Quiz. We will have an oral spelling beeas well.

Debates: 8p and 8t:
Our topic today is an extension of last week's journal topic. "Have the holidays become too commercialized?"  Students will have the opportunity to debate and oppose this idea in partners.

Good Morning Grade Eight!
Today is Monday November 26th, 2012.

Media:



Today we are continuing our unit on Censorship. We will be exploring Internet censorship-or specifically, the lack of censorship on the Internet. We will also discuss the upcoming Media presentation. This assignment was originally posted for today's date, but we have had to delay it a couple weeks. Your presentation will now be on DECEMBER 10th.




Journal:



Staying in the holiday spirit, our topic today is the following:
"If you could invite anyone-alive or dead- to Christmas dinner, who would you pick and why?"
This term you need to write 150-200 words for each writing piece.

Hello Grade Eight!
Today is Tuesday November 27th, 2012.


Library 8P:

In the library we will be working with Ms. Purvis to develop an online Character sketch from your novel study book. This is an extension from the Character maps  you completed last week. Ms Purvis and I will guide you in what online tool will work best for you.

Creative Writing 8P and 8T: 


Today's topic is on The Debt Crisis around the globe. A complicated issue, we will only scratch the surface of this issue by discussing a few details, current facts, and the countries most affected. As well, we will look at both Canada's and the U.S's debt levels and discuss what can be done to eliminate it.

Today is Wednesday November 28th, 2012.

Grammar: 

Today we will be reviewing  both the Adverb lesson and the Verb lesson before your QUIZ NEXT WEEK. We will be completing exercises on pages 259, 260, 268, and 269 of the text. 



Library 8T:

In the library we will be working with Ms. Purvis to develop an online Character sketch. This is to work in combination with your Character map from last week, so bring the character map to class.

Today is Thursday November 29th, 2012.

Novel Study 8P and 8T:

Today we will be continuing our novel study unit. We will be filling out Prediction handouts.  Remember you are to be up to Chapter 3 in your novel by this week. Ensure you bring your novel to class.

Today we are reading a cultural story of a little girl who struggles with her cultural identity. The story is titled: "Some Tings Lie So Deep". It is located on pages 129-135 of the text if you want to take a look before class.

Spelling 8P and 8T:

Today we will have a Spelling test on L11 and exercises on L13.
(We skip the Review units until the end of the year). We will also have our weekly Spelling Bee.

Today is a busy day for our school. We have:

Novel Study 8P and 8T: 

Today we will work on a Character Map. You will choose two characters in your novel thus far and fill out the character map reproducible. When completed, we will share our ideas with our classmates.

Today we will be reading a story titled: "Handling Anger and Resolvng Conflict". It is located on pages 92-95 of your text. We will be discussing the story and completing Question 2 in the book.

We have  Spelling test on L10, an oral Spelling Bee and exercises on Lesson 11.

The topic we will be discussing this week is whether there is still a need for Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Today we will continue our topic on Censorship, specifically, the pros and cons of censorship on the Internet. Now that you know who the CRTC is, and what they do, you can add more insight into the discussion.
After a class discussion, you will be given an informational handout and asked to write a commentary.

 Today's topic is on a childhood memory. You will be writing about a present you always wanted but never received. I look forward to hearing your stories. As a class, we will guess who wrote which paragraph.
